Someone stated recently in a discussion on the Clubhouse e-mail list known as Matureman2:
"I think this is one of the major problems in gay
life......the longevity of relationships based
solely on physical or sexual attraction."
I considered that a bad rap on gays. It has long been
an argument used by straights to invalidate our
relationships. I read a statement the other day
made by a straight woman in an article on divorce.
When same-sex marriage was mentioned, she retorted,
"Two men living together does not make a home or
a marriage."
Heterosexuals are just as promiscuous as gays ever
were and are equally inclined to form an attachment
based solely on physical or sexual attraction. Go live
in a country where prostitution is legal and stand in
line with the men married and unmarried at the local
whorehouse.
And having one mistress or two, or girlfriends, is
a standard lifestyle among successful
businessmen in many countries. Years ago in one country,
I noticed bright blue sheets flapping in the wind
on laundry lines strung from the windows of an upscale
apartment complex. There must have hundreds of them. I
asked a friend what that meant. He told me the complex
was filled with the mistresses of the most successful
businessmen. Blue sheets were a standard among them,
setting them apart from the pristine white of sheets
"at home" (the wife's).
Chinese concubines and "second"
wives (still a practice in Taiwan, for I know some),
Muslim multiple-wives (once mirrored by the American
Mormons) and Biblical relationships (King Solomon of the
300 wives) convict the straights of promiscuity, if
not the gays. And show me a shipful of sailors pouring
out of the holds in a foreign port after a few weeks at
sea, many married men among them.
The divorce rate in the United States is phenomenal.
Multitudes of heterosexuals form relationships based
on physical or sexual attraction and wake up to find
themselves trapped in marriage and/or parenthood.
Bad marriages and irresponsible parenting are a major
factor in our society today.
We gays need not apologize for being human or for our
sexual orientation. At least when we fuck up
a relationship it generally does not fuck up the next
generation -- our "kids," which are mostly cats and dogs.
Even those gay men and women who have human children are
often more loving and responsible parents than their
straight counterparts. The courts are full of straight
men charged with not paying child support as they
promised or had to be court-ordered to do.
Their being "straight" does not make us "crooked."
