While gay people are enjoying vast improvements in social status in the United States and Western Europe, it behooves us all to remember that beneath the surface intense and universal contempt and hatred for us continue to simmer and may erupt anywhere at any time in each of our lives. Some of our Congressional leaders are ardent supporters of groups which advocate our extermination in present-day America. Powerful enemies in the U.S. military are arrayed against us at this moment in support of the promotion to a lofty position in the Pentagon of the errant commander of the base where a soldier was bludgeoned to death with a baseball bat and where severe harassment of gays still occurs a year later.
