Text:
Already a winner of the Pulitzer Prize and a Tony Award, gay composer-lyricist Stephen Sondheim has become the first American recipient of the Praemium Imperiale in the theater and film category, according to Variety. The 12th annual event featured awards being presented by Prince Hitachi at Tokyos Meiji Memorial Hall on Thursday, under the sponsorship of the Japan Art Association. Other laureates of the 2000 Praemium Imperiale were Ellsworth Kelly (painting), Niki de Saint Phalle (sculpture), Richard Rogers (architecture), and Hans Werner Henze (music). Previous winners in the theater and film category include Federico Fellini and Marcel Carni; Sondheims Pacific Overtures is currently running in Tokyo.
