Already a winner of the Pulitzer
Prize and a Tony Award, gay
composer-lyricist Stephen Sondheim
has become the first American
recipient of the Praemium Imperiale
in the theater and film category,
according to Variety. The 12th
annual event featured awards being
presented by Prince Hitachi at
Tokyos Meiji Memorial Hall on
Thursday, under the sponsorship of
the Japan Art Association. Other
laureates of the 2000 Praemium
Imperiale were Ellsworth Kelly
(painting), Niki de Saint Phalle
(sculpture), Richard Rogers
(architecture), and Hans Werner
Henze (music). Previous winners in
the theater and film category include
Federico Fellini and Marcel Carni;
Sondheims Pacific Overtures is
currently running in Tokyo.
