Subject: Hustler found in Personals!

An alert South African member of the Silverfoxes Club notified me the other day of two ads with the same photo in the Clubhouse personals. The ads had different names and different physical specs, including ages. Placed at different times (the first in summer, the second last week), the text in each suggested that the young guy was hustling.

I wrote at once to both e-addresses in the ad, demanding an explanation. No answer yet in either case. I suspect the young man is running scared.

Then today I got a letter from someone who says the offending party, now known as (deleted) bilked him out of a sizeable sum of cash when he was known (in the first ad) as (deleted). I have deleted both ads this morning (California time). I have also attached his picture (from both ads) to benboxerpixlist and to the new silverfoxesclub list, so please keep him in mind when you surf through the Personals in case he turns up again under a third name! Let me know if you see him!

I counsel you all to be VERY careful when answering ads in personals anywhere on the Internet (or anywhere else, for that matter). Let me suggest that sending money or your street address or your phone number to anyone you have just met on the Internet places you at risk and, frankly, also beyond the boundaries of common sense unless you have private reasons to self-justify foolish behavior.

Don't think I have not been the victim of Internet fraud -- twice on a massive scale -- but if we live, we must learn, and if we learn, we should be twice careful in future. You are responsible for your own behavior in these matters.

Subject: The pixel

I got this amusing bit of trivia in the mail today. I work with pixels in Adobe PhotoShop when sizing pix. Probably many of you do, too. ===================
What is a pixel and what can it do for you? The Answer: Pixels should not be confused with the imaginary, elf- or fairy-like creature in children's stories, such as Peter Pan. Pixies can only get you into trouble. On the other hand, to paraphrase an old song, pixels can light up your life--and in fact they already do if you use a computer. The word is a combination of "picture" and "element." Pixels are the smallest picture elements on your computer screen. They are the thousands of dots that, combined, bring you the image of a spreadsheet, the text of your report, or the message that you have caused the machine to make a fatal error. On laptop screens a defective pixel may cause a permanently off-color spot. If you experience this, either return the computer or make that misbehaving pixel stand in the corner. Dot's all I have to say about dot.

Subject: Cheney/Lieberman: gay civil unions

(Ben Boxer says: "I would not count what either of these gentlemen says as a glimmer of hope. Both represent powerful, vested interests vigorously opposed to fairness and equality for bisexuals and gays. The real value of their discourse to us is that it has taken place openly on this level. The international media exposure given to the vice-presidential debate has alerted a wider range of voters to the inequities in our social situation. Many among them are people of conscience who will be given pause for reflection on those mostly ignored Christian homilies, Do unto others as you would have others do unto you, and Love thy neighbor as thyself -- which are supposed to be at the core of their beliefs, not pushed beyond the fringe . Somewhere along the way, the Christian majority in this country will have to come to terms with the teachings they choose to ignore while espousing the antithesis of love toward us. Considering their belief in divine retribution, they should be trembling in their boots over their own salvation.")

Headline:
Cheney and Lieberman debate gay civil unions
(The Advocate, 10/06/00)

Text: The Democratic and Republican vice presidential nominees grappled with the issue of gay relationships during their debate Thursday night in Danville, Ky. Debate moderator Bernard Shaw asked the candidates the question .Should a male who loves a male and a female who loves a female have all.all.the constitutional rights enjoyed by every American citizen?. Democratic nominee Joseph Lieberman, who was asked the question first, told Shaw that it is a .very current and difficult question, and I.ve been thinking about it, and I want to explain what my thoughts have been.. Lieberman, who as a senator has sponsored the federal Employment Non-Discrimination Act to ban antigay bias in the workplace, said that the country is based on the promise of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness and that the promise is continually extended to include more people. .And in our time the frontier of that effort is extending those kinds of rights to gay and lesbian Americans who are citizens of this country and children of the same awesome God, just as much as any of the rest of us are..

Lieberman said the question of equal rights for gay and lesbian couples is .difficult. because .it confronts or challenges the traditional notion of marriage as being limited to a heterosexual couple, which I support. But I must say, I.m thinking about this because I have friends who are in gay and lesbian partnerships who have said to me, .Isn.t it unfair that we don.t have similar legal rights to inheritance, to visitation when one of the partners is ill, to health care benefits?. And that.s why I.m thinking about it. And my mind is open to taking some action that will address those elements of unfairness while respecting the traditional religious and civil institution of marriage..

Cheney, whose lesbian daughter, Mary, embraced him on the debate stage after the event, agreed that the question is .a tough one.. Without referring in his response to his daughter or ever using the words .gay. or .lesbian,. Cheney said that .people should be able to enter into any kind of relationship they want to enter into. It.s really no one else.s business in terms of trying to regulate or prohibit behavior in that regard.. The issue of granting legal recognition to gay relationships, said Cheney, is .not a slam dunk.. In an apparent reference to Vermont and its civil unions law, Cheney said, .I think the fact of the matter, of course, is, that matter is regulated by the states. I think different states are likely to come to different conclusions, and that.s appropriate. I don.t think there should necessarily be a federal policy in this area. I try to be open-minded about it as much as I can and tolerant of those relationships. And like Joe, I also wrestle with the extent to which there ought to be legal sanction of those relationships. I think we ought to do everything we can to tolerate and accommodate whatever kind of relationships people want to enter into..
