"The fact that the Japanese government didn't grant him asylum actually is surprising, because it should have done so in light of the fact that it has signed an international convention on the status of refugees."
Human rights groups say anti-gay harassment is a
fact of life in Iran, though the nature of that
persecution is masked by false charges. A
UNHCR report on Iranian refugees and asylum
seekers refers to gay people as one of five
categories of vulnerable social groups in Iran.
"Homosexuality is forbidden by Islamic law and
will be punished," the report reads. "Sodomy,
defined as 'sexual intercourse with a male,' is
punishable by death if both parties 'are mature, of
sound mind and have free will.'"

Those lines appear in Christopher Isherwood's "The Berlin Stories," tales about the author's adventures in that city during the late 1920s and early '30s. The lines inspired the title "I Am a Camera" for John Van Druten's successful 1951 play based on the stories and for the 1951 film of the same name. In 1966, the stories evolved into the hit Broadway show "Cabaret" and, in 1972, became a successful film of that name starring Liza Minnelli. Isherwood was the son of an army officer killed in World War I. At prep school, he made friends with the future poet, W.H. Auden, also gay. Their friendship endured throughout their lifetimes. In 1929, Isherwood traveled to Berlin to visit his friend Auden, who had been sent there by his parents to learn German. Thrilled by Berlin's thriving underworld of gay bars and boy prostitutes, Isherwood stayed on, teaching English and gathering the material that would eventually comprise the Berlin stories. In 1932, when he was 28, Isherwood fell in love with a younger man named Heinz and, perceiving the implications of the rise of fascism, took Heinz away from Germany a few months later. For the next four years he and Heinz traveled extensively in Europe, but Heinz wanted to go home to Berlin. He did so and was arrested and imprisoned for homosexual activities, and later served in the German army. In the meantime, Isherwood and Auden -- who may have been non-romantic sex partners since their mutual school days -- collaborated on three plays and in 1938 traveled to China, where they wrote a book together. Isherwood washed his hands of Europe when Hitler invaded Poland in 1939 and moved to the United States, where he became a pacifist and immersed himself in Hindu philosophy. During 1941-42 he worked for the American Friends Service Committee at a hostel for Central European war refugees outside of Philadelphia. Then he moved to California, and for the rest of the war was a resident student of the Vedanta Society of Southern California, becoming a Hollywood screenwriter as well. He also continued to write books, including "A Single Man," in 1964, considered the best account of a day in the life of a gay man ever written. In 1953, at age 49, Isherwood had met and fallen in love with Don Bachardy, an 18-year-old painter and portraitist. Although Isherwood's friends were scandalized by the age difference between the two lovers, the relationship proved extremely stable and long-lasting: Isherwood and Bachardy lived together for the next 33 years, until Isherwood's death in his 80s in 1986 in Santa Monica, California.

that has become a classic. By the end of
his long life he was, as his
biographer Claude J. Summers writes, "a
deeply revered icon of contemporary...gay culture, a
courage-teacher who vigorously protested
the heterosexual dictatorship and who
unashamedly expressed solidarity with

Don Bachardy, now 67, still lives in Santa Monica. His
drawings and paintings are in the collections of
many major art museums.
