Dean, could you tell me either on or off list if you've ever been to the
memorial for Ann Frank, and what it was like? Were many Jews killed in
Holland? Wasn't the diary written originally in German and translated by
Eleanor Roosevelt?

Subject: Hello Bob and Harley!: Here's the info on Anne Frank you requested
Hello Bob and Harley,
I will try to answer your main questions about Anne Frank here. (She wrote "Kitty" - the
fantasy person she addressed in her diary, in beautiful Dutch prose. Am not sure whether Eleanor
Roosevelt translated them into English.)
The spookiest, most moving and memorable moment when visiting the "Anne Frank Huis" in 1995 was
opening up the bookcase hiding the entrance to the "Secret Annexe" and climbing up the steep
staircase leading to the place where the Frank and Van Daan families were forced to live in hiding
from 1942 until their discovery by the Nazis (the "Green Police") in August of '44. Photos of
early 1940s movie stars that Anne glued to her bedroom wall back then are all still right there
where she put them! An old arched window in the annexe's attic with view of the Westerkerk (West
Church) tower was the only way the two families could look at the sky without risk of discovery by
passers-by out on the street. (The Westerkerk can also be seen together with the Homomonument on
another posting I sent today.) I constantly felt reminded of the Hollywood movie on Anne Frank
from 1959, I think it was.
Reading Anne Frank's diaries in the original Dutch is probably one of the greatest pleasures of
having learned that language years ago. (For some reason I've always felt drawn to the Dutch
people and culture.): "Het Achterhuis: Dagboekbrieven" ["The Back Annexe: Diary Letters"],
Uitgeverij Bert Bakker (publishers), Amsterdam, 1997 --- which contains all her diary entries from
June 12, 1942 until August 1, 1944.
Will write more on Anne, especially her lesbian musings in several entries, in one of my next
e-mails. Cannot tell you straight away how many Jews were killed in Holland. Most were deported
to death camps in Poland and other German-occupied areas. Will check out the statistics for you,
though.
Until then, take care, my friend, and give Harley a big hug for me, O.K.? Hugs to you, too!

Subject: Surprising 18th-Century Roots to the 1987 Homomonument!
Surprising, sodomitical info on the attached pic, in English and Dutch:
In the foreground, the Homomonument:
Design Karin Daan, 1987. Official opening September 5, 1987. .Commemorates all women and men
ever oppressed and persecuted because of their homosexuality..
In the background, the Westerkerk [.West Church.]:
Time of construction 1620-1631; the architect Hendrick de Keijser died (1n 1621) during the
construction of what is perhaps the most beautiful Protestant Church in the world. On top of the
tower, which was finished in 1638, stands the Imperial Crown. The chimes as well as the organ are
known for their beauty and richness of tone. On December 8, 1669 the great Dutch painter
Rembrandt van Rijn (1606-1669) was interred in the church. The exact location of his tomb is not
known. .It becomes clear from [Jacobus Hebelaar.s] confessions and those of Hendrik Eelders [in
the 1730 and 1764 respectively] that sodomites also made contact with each other in . churches;
according to Hebelaar .mainly in the New Church, on long evenings behind the pew.. Eelders talked
about .the old, new Wester, and Amstel churches, in the same fashion in Niewe Sijds Cappel [New
Side Chapel], during the sermons as well as the playing of the organ, and often outside around the
said churches and at the pissoirs mainly of the West Church, not only at the time sermons were
being given but the other evenings as well.. He had once seen a catechist groping another man.s
breeches during a sermon. One Bernard Tornaar, incidentally a braggart and fantast, claimed in
1762 that a man could not keep his hands off him while attending service in the West Church..

- --------The same text in Dutch:
Op de voorgrond, het Homomonument.
Ontwerp Karin Daan, 1987. In gebruik genomen 5 september 1987.

"Someone told me that the spot where Dean kneels has never been without flowers since it was
created."
You're right, Doug. We've never seen the Homomonument without any flowers gracing it, and, more
importantly, have never, ever seen it defaced (although my lover and I have always made sure to
stop by there at least once, if not many times, each trip to Holland for the past seven years).

Subject: Inscription on the Third Homomonument Triangle
[The following (Dutch) text was taken from Jos Versteegen, "Roze Amsterdam: Een culturele gids"
("Pink Amsterdam: A Cultural Guide"), p. 214, Jos Versteegen & Uitgeverij J.H. Gottmer/H.J.W.
Becht bv(publishers), Bloemendaal, Holland, 1998. English transl. mine. Tried as best I could to
give the poem the same meaning as the Dutch original while simultaneously trying to get it to
rhyme in the same manner.]
"According to [Karin] Daan the third ground-level triangle is comparable to a memorial stone and
symbolizes the Past. A metrical line from Jacob Israkl de Haan [who was a gay Jew], 'Naar
vriendschap zulk een mateloos verlangen' ['Such a boundless longing for friendship'] is inscribed
on this stone. This line of poetry stems from a sonnet by De Haan, published in 1917 in the 'To
[My] Many Friends' section of his "Songs" cluster":
To a Young Fisherman
No roses are as thy cheeks nip'd,
No tulips as thy feet so velv't,
In no eyes afore I e'er beheld,
Such a boundless longing for friendship.
Behind us was the sea's eternity, etc.

Dear Dean and the List,
I had the privilege of attending the original dedication (about 1986) of
the Homomonument in Amsterdam and have a copy of the publication given to
guests, autographed by a speaker at the event. If anyone wants a pic or an
article scanned from that, I can do it gladly.
