-(Joke) A crusty old Army Colonel
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Subject: (Joke) A crusty old Army Colonel A crusty old Army Colonel found himself at a gala event downtown, hosted by a local liberal arts college. There was no shortage of extremely young, idealistic men in attendance, one of whom approached the Colonel for conversation. He said, "Excuse me, sir, but you seem to be a very serious man. Are you this way all the time, or is something bothering you?" "No," the Colonel said, "just serious by nature." The young man looked at his awards and decorations and said, "It looks like you have seen a lot of action." The Colonel's short reply was, "Yes, a lot of action." The young man, tiring of trying to start up a conversation, said, "You know, you should lighten up a little - relax and enjoy yourself." The colonel just stared at him in his serious manner. Finally the young man said, "You know, I hope you don't take this the wrong way, but when was the last time you had sex?" The colonel looked at him and replied, "1955." He said, "Well there you go; you really need to chill out and quit taking everything so seriously - I mean, no sex since 1955, isn't that a little extreme?"
The colonel, glancing at his watch, said in his
matter-of-fact voice, "Oh, I don't know, it's only
21:30 now"

From: Edward eho01@alumni.poly.edu Subject: Banns Being Read for Gay Weddings in Canada My email crapped out two days ago, I am finally getting my emails today. Tried to send this out on Thursday, but obviously it did not go through. Just got in about a half-hour ago from shoveling snow outside. Here in Brooklyn, NY, we already have 8 inches on the ground officially of the white stuff. Rather have 8 inches of the other white stuff, from a santa, hehe. This is only the start of the storm. Happy I left a day early from my office in DC, else it would have been a nightmare trying to get home today, not to mention all the snow that would be in front of my house! I've already buried two cars on the curbside in front of my house!

TORONTO - In an ancient Christian tradition, a predominantly gay church here plans to conduct what it calls the modern world's first legal gay weddings on Jan. 14. Three readings of marriage banns for a gay couple and a lesbian couple are paving the way for a legal double wedding next month at the Metropolitan Community Church of Toronto, says the Rev. Brent Hawkes, a pastor at the church. Ontario's provincial government says it will not register the same-sex marriages. Referring to press reports "that same-sex marriages can be legally entered into through the process of publication of banns," Judy Hartman, Ontario's deputy registrar general, wrote last week in response to questions, "This is not the case." "Federal common law, as confirmed by recent federal legislation, defined marriage as the voluntary union for life of one man and one woman, to the exclusion of all others," Ms. Hartman wrote. "Provincial law cannot alter the federal common law or confer capacity to marry." Federal legislation has erased virtually all legal distinctions between same-sex unions and heterosexual marriages. But in a concession to conservatives, the bill's preamble defined marriage as "the lawful union of one man and one woman to the exclusion of all others." Next month's ceremonies, however, are expected to add to growing pressure to allow same-sex marriages in Canada. The fight is supported by influential opinion makers, from the left and the right. "In the year 2000, it is grotesque that a loving and committed couple should be denied their fondest wish because they happen to be of the same sex," an editorial argued recently in The Globe and Mail. "Homosexuals are equal members of society, entitled to the same rights as anyone else. Why, then, should they be denied the right to marry?" Barbara Amiel, a conservative columnist, wrote last summer in Maclean's, Canada's best-selling newsweekly: "Same-sex marriages ought to be allowed by the state. And I think all conservatives interested in preserving the unique nature of marriage might want to reconsider their position." As word of the impending wedding ceremonies has spread, Mr. Hawkes has received scores of telephone calls from gay couples across North America interested in getting married. But he says he will follow the law on banns, which requires that one member regularly attend the church. The pastor said that as part of the wedding ceremony he would issue the marriage licenses and that the provincial registrar "has no authority to refuse to register the licenses."
If Ontario refuses to register the marriages, he predicted, "we will go
to court, and we will win." A legal appeal, the pastor said, would be
based on freedom of religion, and on Canadian law "that says you cannot
discriminate on the basis of sex orientation."
